Number the Stars – Louis Lowry
February 2023
Number the Stars is a unique creation, in that it takes place in Denmark, during the Nazi occupation. This story is full of bravery, hope, and incredible whits. Ten-year-olds Annemarie and Ellen are best friends, while being constantly bothered by Annemarie’s five-year-old sister, Kirsti. Ellen has to face the constant fear of the Nazis, because of her Jewish heritage. The Johansens (Annemarie’s brave family), are charged with the task of protecting the Rosens, (Ellen’s family.) Despite having a tragedy of their own, the death of the much-beloved older sister, Lise, the Johansens put their lives in danger in order to help the Rosens. You will learn the true meaning of friendship and Christ-like love in the face of the enemy.

Lines of Courage – Jennifer A. Nielsen
January 2023
Lines of Courage is a one-of-a-kind story. It quickly enthralls you, and doesn’t let you go. This story is a masterfully told tale about five truly inspirational individuals and their struggles and victories during World War One. Juliette, a native French girl, is my personal favorite. She deeply cares about other people, and is a great friend. I love her story so much because it is a story of bravery, heartache, courage, and great hope amidst fear. Read the whole story to discover each individual character and their remarkable stories.
Age Range: mature audience, most likely 10 and up

Rilla of Ingleside – L.M. Montgomery
July 2022
Rilla is real. She really is. One of my literary heroes, she embraces (after a little while) challenges and accepts them. She isn’t perfect by any stretch, but she is real. This book takes place during World War One. After reading this book, I understand completely why L.M. Montgomery chose to write a book about a war through a fifteen-year-old girl’s eyes. It couldn’t have been done any other way. Enjoy.
Age range: anyone and everyone! (well……. actually, probably 12-ish and up)

Words on Fire – Jennifer A. Nielsen
June 2022
This book is amazing! The main character, Audra, is one to be remembered. Her undying love of books and her culture is very inspiring. The plot and endless action will keep readers on the edge of their seats. There are many memorable characters. One thing to keep in mind is that this story does take place during a war and it has an amazing plot. However, I would not recommend this book for children under ten. For anyone who loves historical fiction, (or even if you don’t, yet…. this book is a must-read!!)
Age range: ten – 110
